HISTORY OF THE CHESS PIECES

Many people consider American Paul Morphy to be one of the best and saddest chess players of all time. At the age of twelve, he repeatedly defeated the formidable Hungarian chess master Johann Löwenthal, earning him the title of first true child genius. For the next seven years, Morphy concentrated on his studies. when he received his law degree from the University of Louisiana at the age of 19. With some free time on his hands and not yet of legal age to start practising law, Morphy went back to chess. Morphy travelled the world over the following three years, easily defeating all opponents who dared to stand up to him. Numerous media sources declared the first “Chess celebrity” to be the unofficial World Chess Champion. Soon after, at the age of 22, Morphy declared he was giving up on chess, citing a lack of competitive play. Morphy intended to concentrate on his chosen profession of practising law once he retired from chess. Sadly, this was cut short in 1861 when the American Civil War broke out, and he became adamantly opposed to the Confederate states’ succession. Morphy’s legal career was not very successful after the war. When a few prospective customers did come into his office, they wanted to talk about chess, not the law. Feeling frustrated, Morphy gave up practising law and lived a lazy life for the remainder of his days. He passed away at the age of 47 after rejecting all offers to pick up the game of chess again. Many people regard to Paul Morphy as “The Pride and Sorrow of Chess.”
